Trump Administration Expands Visa Crackdown to All 55 Million Holders

Posted by Paul Saluja | Aug 22, 2025

The Trump administration has announced a sweeping expansion of its immigration enforcement efforts, stating that all 55 million foreigners currently holding U.S. visas will now be subject to continuous review. This initiative represents one of the most far-reaching efforts yet to identify and deport individuals found to be in violation of their visa terms.

Continuous Vetting of Visa Holders

According to the State Department, every visa holder—ranging from tourists to students to long-term workers—will undergo “continuous vetting”. If new information arises suggesting that an individual has overstayed, committed a crime, engaged in activity threatening public safety, or shown ties to terrorism, their visa will be revoked. If they are already inside the United States, they could face deportation.

This policy shift builds on earlier efforts under the Trump administration that prioritized the deportation of migrants without legal status and targeted student and exchange visa holders. By broadening the scope toall visa classes, the administration is signaling that no category of visa holder is exempt from heightened scrutiny.

Truck Driver Work Visas Halted

In a related move, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the U.S. will stop issuing worker visas for commercial truck drivers, citing road safety concerns and the need to protect American truckers' livelihoods. The Department of Transportation has also begun enforcing stricter English proficiency standards for drivers, pointing to fatal accidents linked to drivers' inability to read signs or communicate in English.

While proponents argue this measure enhances safety and strengthens domestic job protections, critics note that foreign truck drivers have played an important role in filling labor shortages across the industry.

Use of Social Media and Expanded Data Collection

The State Department confirmed that visa reviews will involve not only law enforcement and immigration records, but also the collection of social media data. Earlier this year, the administration made it mandatory for applicants to disable privacy protections on their phones and apps during interviews. This allows officials to conduct deeper monitoring of digital activity, looking for potential “indicators of ineligibility.”

Potential Impact

The sheer scope of this review raises practical and economic questions. With more than 12.8 million lawful permanent residents and over 3.6 million individuals on temporary visas already living in the U.S., the continuous monitoring of 55 million visa holders will require immense resources. Experts warn that this could discourage international students, workers, and businesses from choosing the United States, ultimately weakening the nation's global competitiveness.

As immigration policies continue to evolve, individuals on visas should take proactive steps to ensure compliance with U.S. law, including:

  • Strictly adhering to visa timeframes.

  • Avoiding even minor legal infractions.

  • Being cautious about online activity that could be misinterpreted by immigration authorities.

Saluja Law's Perspective

At Saluja Law, we recognize that policies like this create heightened uncertainty for immigrants, students, and workers who contribute significantly to American society. We believe that while national security is essential, enforcement strategies should be balanced with fairness, proportionality, and due process.

We encourage anyone currently in the U.S. on a visa—or seeking one in the future—to consult with experienced immigration counsel to review their status, rights, and potential vulnerabilities.
